Practicum in Teaching Computer Science
Welcome to CSCI 698. This class is a class for CS PhD students that are new to being a CS instructor (aka TA).
The course will provide knowledge and tools to help students develop as instructors while the students are being a TA for the first time. We will cover topics such as:
- The brain and learning
- Teaching philosophies
- Teaching techniques
- PeCK, POGIL
- Instructional design
- Student engagement
- Technology of teaching
- DEI
- Professional development (as an instructor)
- TA responsibilities
- Office hours/student interactions
We will also be covering research into teaching CS (or engineering in general) through paper reviews. Students will get the opportunity to develop two assignments and will survey the undergraduate/masters students in the courses they TA for feedback on their effectiveness.
